Marcus Edwards leaving Sporting CP?
Ruben Amorim has asked Man Utd to enquire about signing Marcus Edwards from Sporting CP. Edwards could be signed as a replacement for Antony, who might be loaned out or sold by Man Utd in January.
Marcus Edwards is at a significant juncture in his career, as he contemplates either leaving Sporting or renewing his contract with the club. Although he participated in 44 matches during the 2023/2024 season, his lack of consistency resulted in him being made available for negotiation in the summer transfer market. Nevertheless, the offers received from clubs in England and Saudi Arabia did not meet expectations, leading to a standstill in negotiations. Sporting is seeking a transfer fee ranging from €20 to €25 million, a sum that potential buyers find steep. Edwards' contract with Sporting is set to expire in June 2026. His performance this season will be crucial in deciding whether he will be sold in the next summer transfer window or offered a contract extension.
Marcus Edwards is going through his toughest period since joining Portugal, as he has lost his place in the starting lineup due to physical challenges and competition from Trincão. Although there was some interest from English football and the Arab market during the transfer window, Edwards stayed at Sporting CP. With his contract set to expire in 2026, Sporting CP's management is contemplating either renewing his contract or allowing him to leave in January to recover some of the €7.6 million they invested in January 2022 when he was purchased from V. Guimarães. At present, a departure appears to be the most probable outcome. There is speculation that a return to England with various clubs may have impacted his performance.
Marcus Edwards is seen as a good possibility for Sporting to make money in the market. He is not a starter under Rúben Amorim and an offer around 20 million euros would be considered.
Marcus Edwards has a fixed goal of playing in the Premier League and is not willing to move to the Middle East for now.
Interest from clubs in England. Sporting is willing to negotiate for a deal involving €25/30 million.
