According to Mundo Deportivo, Roberto Fernández has finalized his transfer to RCD Espanyol following a successful loan period during which he netted six vital goals. Espanyol has secured 50% of his rights for a fee of 6.2 million euros. It is stipulated that if Espanyol remains in the Primera Division for the next two seasons, they will be required to purchase an additional 25% of his rights, with 12.5% being acquired after the 2026-27 season and another 12.5% after the 2027-28 season, for a cumulative 3.1 million euros. Should Espanyol decide to purchase the remaining 25%, the overall transfer expenditure will amount to 12.4 million euros, ranking it among the most costly transfers in the club's history.

Roberto Fernández had a loan spell at RCD Espanyol during the latter half of the season. Espanyol had the option to buy him for 10 million euros, but this option expired on June 1. They had initially offered 4 million euros before the deadline. Recently, Espanyol raised their offer to 6 million euros for 50% of Fernández's rights. Sporting de Braga, which acquired him last summer for 1.8 million euros for full ownership of his rights, was open to accepting this offer. However, Espanyol altered some previously agreed future percentages, leading to complications. Roberto Fernández expressed his wish to stay at Espanyol, mentioning that his current focus is on the European Under-21 Championship and he is not involved in negotiations until the tournament concludes. No agreement has been reached yet between the clubs or with the player.

The deadline for this option is May 31, after which his release clause will revert to 45 million euros. Roberto Fernández is happy in Barcelona and wishes to stay at Espanyol, but the club's offer has not exceeded four million euros. If a new loan is not agreed by the deadline, other clubs may offer more for his loan and salary.
