Lovre Kalinić Transfer from Hajduk Split to Gent
The signing of Tom Vandenberghe by Gent has ended the chances of Lovre Kalinić joining from Hajduk Split.
Lovre Kalinić, the captain of Hajduk Split, is rumored to transfer to Belgian club Gent. He has stayed in Split due to minor health issues and did not travel with the team to Spain for training. Kalinić was previously at Gent eight years ago when the Belgians paid 3.1 million euros for him before selling him to Aston Villa for six million euros after two years. Kalinić's contract with Hajduk Split expires in the summer, and it's uncertain if Hajduk will offer him a new contract.
Lovre Kalinić will not travel with Hajduk Split for preparations in Spain due to health reasons. There were previous media reports in Belgium about a potential transfer to Gent. Kalinić is still open to leaving Hajduk as his contract ends in June, allowing him to negotiate with interested clubs.
Belgian club Gent has shown interest in acquiring goalkeeper Lovre Kalinić to replace Daniel Schmidt, who has departed from the club. Kalinić, who had previously been part of Gent's squad, made a transfer from Hajduk in December 2016 for 3.1 million euros. This transfer established him as the most expensive Croatian goalkeeper at the time and set a record transfer fee for Gent. Negotiations are currently ongoing with Kalinić, who may potentially serve as the second-choice goalkeeper behind Roef. Kalinić had suffered a significant injury that prevented him from participating in the 2022 World Cup, leading to the loss of his starting position at Hajduk to Ivan Lučić. His contract with Hajduk is set to expire at the end of the current season, providing him the opportunity to negotiate freely without requiring the club's consent.
Belgian side Gent is reportedly interested in bringing Lovre Kalinić back to the club as they search for a new backup goalkeeper following Daniel Schmidt’s departure. Kalinić, who previously had a successful period at Gent before his move to Aston Villa, is currently with Hajduk Split, where his contract is set to expire in the summer of 2025. However, it has been reported that the Croatian club is willing to let go of the 34-year-old, as he has become an expensive backup option. A return to Gent could provide Kalinić with a fresh start and enhance their goalkeeping options with an experienced and familiar player.
